Cancun

A trip to Mexico was long over due since our Mexican Rivera cruise last year turned out to be a disaster. We went to Cancun Mexico for 5 days and it was so beautiful. We had a 2 hour layover in Mexico city and this is probably as close as we will ever get to it.
It's the biggest city we have ever seen. Someone told us 22 million people live there.
We stayed at the Dreams all inclusive resort and it was amazing. I've heard mixed things about all inclusive and I must say we were very impressed. The first night we ate at their sushi restaurant right on the beach. As you can see my skin and hair weren't responding well to the humidity.
Our hotel was right by the strip of clubs, restaurants, and malls so we walked down there after dinner to see what was going on. Little did we know we had planned our vacation right during Spring Break, so everywhere we wanted to go was double the price. We ended up just walking around and people watching. My favorite thing was the donkey I saw in the back of a parked truck. Some guy sitting in the truck got out and asked if I wanted a picture with it. He was ready to get the donkey out of the truck, so I could pay him for a picture....hahah
We walked by all the clubs and this was my favorite one with everyone dancing with balloons. I don't know why, but I thought it looked really fun.
The next day we awoke to this=heaven. This was the view from our balcony

This plane flew over us when we were laying out and the banner says Christie I love you so much. Will you marry me? Awwwww
Another great thing about the Dreams is the dolphins. We seriously contemplated paying$150 for the dolphins to push us, but instead we just watched everyone else.

We debated between Chichen Itza and Tulum and ended up choosing Tulum since it was only a half day trip vs a full day. Tulum was amazing
Iguanas loooove Tulum. They were everywhere

My favorite part was the beach:)
Back at the Dreams.....The Swing Bar. I want one of these at our house.
Our friends from Detroit we had dinner with and met at the swing bar. Great things happen at the swing barThe beautiful blue ocean which is so much better than Californias not so blue ocean
Al made lots of friends playing Volleyball. Everyone kept asking if he played in highschool or college. He is a natural at everything he does!
Our last night in Mexico we took the bus downtown to go walk around the flea market called Mercado 28. When we got there everything was closed so we walked back to the bus stop and made a detour at Wal Mart. It was pretty entertaining to walk through a Mexican Wal Mart. We picked out some snacks we couldn't buy in California. I love spicy food....loooove it. On our way out of Wal Mart we bought a fresh tamale from a lady on the street and it was delicous.
We took one last walk through the strip of clubs and had the best taco ever.
On our last day we took advantage of the all inclusive. We did Yoga overlooking the ocean. Every yoga class should be like that
We took out the kayak
and we ate Spicy Fruit!!
Every morning the ash trays were smoothed over with sand and had the dreams logo stamped in it. By the end of the day there would be fingerprints....the same thing happens at Anthropologie with the candles. Why do people have to stick their fingers in everything? Get a HOBBY
I loved watching the dolphins everyday.
Cancun was a blast. We loved staying at the Dreams and came to the conclusion that the world should be all inclusive. Our last memorable experience in Canun was at the airport in the duty free shop. The cigarettes packs have really good advice written on the front
Maybe people will get a hint when they buy cigarettes.

Good Ol Glendale

Before we went to Mexico which I will post pictures of soon we went to this really famous Armenian restaurant in Glendale called Raffis. Everytime I tell someone I live in Glendale the first question is....Are you Armenian?? It's kind of like when I tell people I grew up in Utah and the first question is.....Are you....and I say Mormon? I'm not really sure why there are so many Armenians in Glendale, but all I know is that they drive really nice cars and keep them clean like me. At least we have that in common, the clean part that is.Everyone that has told me about Raffi's forgot to mention it's all outside seating. It just so happened the night we went it was freezing cold (for California), so they had the heat lamps on and I'm so glad I wore my coat. Instead of giving you a basket of bread to snack on they give you these tortillas, greenery, radishes, and onion. None of us were really sure what to do with it, so we just rolled it up like a taco and pretended we all knew what was going on.
We also ordered the hummus which was ok, but they didn't serve it with pita bread, so our only option was the tortillas.
There entire menu is full of shish kabobs and salads. Luckily we asked how big the entrees are and the picture below is my half. At first I thought that was cheese on the rice, but its just orange colored rice.....who knew.
Al & Aaron
I asked some guy in front of the restaurant to take our picture and he asked where are you from? As soon as I said we live in Glendale he asked.....Are you Armenian? Ha do I look least bit Armenian? I wish I had olive skin and dark hair. I think he was a little out of it because our picture seems to be a little lop sided
After our big Armenian dinner we decided to play Operation. If you ever come over to our house and want to play a game, chances are it will be Chutes & Ladders, Candy Land, or Operation. None of us had played Operation in years, so we had to brush up on the rules of the game. Here we all are.
Al using all those hours spent in the OR watching surgeries.... Now was his chance to shine
Celia was definately the most precise
I on the other hand just wanted to get it over with because I haaaate when the nose buzzes at you. Al was the big winner of Operation.
Al and I got to meet up with my cousin Elisha who I haven't seen in a few years. She was in Woodland Hills with her track team, so we went and had dinner with her at BJs
Elisha is awesome at sports....obviously I didn't get that Ranes gene. I found this picture online of her, hope she doesn't mind:) Good to see you Elisha!!

Go Green

I decided to be festive for St Patricks Day and cook a traditional Irish dinner of corned beef and cabbage. It was my first time eating and cooking it, so I wasn't sure how it would turn out. Dinner with my special green drink.
Suprisingly everything turned out pretty good. The meat was a little tough, but the vegetables made up for it. Also mustard is really good on corned beef. After dinner we went hot tubbing. I like to think of this next picture as our own private pool and house, but then again we live in California and houses in our price range are in Compton.
Sean & Jill brought 4 different kinds of Root Beer from our favorite soda shop....Galcos (previous blog) Lets just say we got wild in the hot tub with our bottles of Root Beer.
Cheers to St Patricks Day. I hope everyone remembered to wear green!!

Chocolate Souffle

I was inspired to make my own Chocolate Souffle after spending $9 on one the other night. I did some research on recipes and picked one that seemed to have the best comments.
I made a mini one since I didn't have enough batter for 3
I was a little nervous to see how they would turn out, but I must say I was pretty impressed with the results.
Al ate two and said they were delicous and he is the dessert king, so that means a lot :)
Chocolate Souffle

Ingredients
• 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, softened
• 10 1/2 ounces (10 squares) extra-bittersweet chocolate
• 1 1/3 cups whole milk
• 1 tablespoon cornstarch
• 3 large egg yolks, room temperature, lightly beaten
• 6 large egg whites, room temperature
• 1/3 cup sugar; more for soufflé ramekins

Preparation
Heat oven to 400°. Butter and sugar six 6-ounce ramekins. Place on a rimmed baking sheet; set aside. In a double boiler over medium heat, melt the chocolate until smooth. Remove from the heat and keep warm.
In a medium heavy-bottom saucepan combine milk and cornstarch. Stir well with a wooden spoon to combine. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring continuously, until thick.
Remove milk mixture from the heat and stir in warm melted chocolate. Let cool slightly. Add lightly beaten egg yolks and stir until well combined.
In the bowl of a heavy-duty mixer, whip egg whites on medium speed until foamy. Slowly add sugar and increase speed to high. Whip until shiny and stiff peaks form, about 3 minutes.
Using a whisk, lighten the chocolate mixture with about 1/3 of the beaten egg whites. Stir until well-combined. Using a large rubber spatula, fold in remaining egg whites until just incorporated.
Spoon mixture into prepared souffle ramekins; the mixture should come up to the top of the ramekin. Transfer filled soufflé ramekins on rimmed baking sheet to oven. Bake until risen, 12 to 15 minutes. Serve immediately.
